Sapient, The birth of Artificial Intelligence

It is a pure science-fiction novel. I tell of a not so distant future where the Internet has been abandoned and Web3 has been a failure.

Social Networks no longer exist and a new network of Artificial Intelligences named SAPIENT has replaced the web. In their new daily life, people use a device called Pearl connected to their own Artificial Intelligence, a personal auxiliary intelligence, connected to their consciences.

And as in all stories, something goes wrong and a conspiracy of dangerous people and Artificial Intelligences wants to change the new order of things and take control of the new network.

I dedicate this work of mine to the 50 years of crazy and fantastic innovations that I was lucky enough to experience in the hope that one would arrive that would allow me to travel in space like Kirk and Spock "Space, the final frontier. Here are the journeys of the starship Enterprise on her five-year mission to explore strange new worlds in search of other life and civilizations, going where no man has gone before."

The internet has been abandoned. Web3 was a failure. Social networks no longer exist. A new network named SAPIENT has replaced the web. In their new daily life, people use a device called Pearl connected to its own Artificial Intelligence, a personal auxiliary intelligence, connected to one's conscience.

A professor. Son of him. A Hack Lab. Larry, Sergej, Elon, Richard, Zuck, Bill and a global organization called WWB, together with Google, are working on the development of Sapient, a decentralized web network connected to a powerful Artificial Intelligence that protects individuals' personal data. But a conspiracy of people and AI tries to change the new order of things and take control of the new network.

Thus begins a race against time, made up of moves and countermoves, necessary for the positioning of one's pawns on the global chessboard.

Traveling the most enlightened and darkest corridors of technology, innovation and socio-economic changes of the coming years, made of bold predictions, the protagonists will have to fight an enemy born from the fears of man and his own AI, corrupted by power and hunger control.

The ending will be the beginning of a new and unexpected adventure.

Reviews are fundamental for an author. They certainly represent the most sincere element for evaluating one's work and understanding the public's reactions. When writing we don't imagine the readers but we try to give the story a flavor that can capture the interest of a specific audience. But the result is often very poor and at the same time surprising. I also realized this after the first feedback I received.

I start the reviews from TheBookPub with the article title “Sapient, the birth of artificial intelligence: why read it” because I find it perfect to introduce you to Sapient. There is a reason to read it and I would like to hear it from you before I tell you mine.

For me, Sapient is innovation, but above all reflection: a story in which man shares his doubts and fears with his artificial intelligence, in search of help that allows him to preserve his individuality. What struck me most, however, is the collaboration between mind and machine, showing how even the latter, in union with our conscience, is not always infallible.

In the first version, Luca's story was like a thick book that had been sitting in the attic for too long: dust had accumulated on the surface, but I could still feel the solidity of the story. I knew he was hiding something precious under all those layers.

Thus began our collaboration: we dusted, cleaned and perfected the story, until we brought out the true soul of Sapient, Luca and Max, the protagonists of the story.

Sara Tamponi

I imagined Sapient thinking about the need to re-found the Internet, today distorted and afflicted by evils of all sorts, from fake news to mass surveillance.

In Sapient I have placed all my hopes that a greater understanding of the risks will allow the community to stop the mass surveillance machine when it counts half of the world's population among its users (Cit. Tim Berners Lee).

Sapient is an Artificial Intelligence that controls the new network. Its architecture is decentralized and is based on the evolution of the BlockChain which I called LightChain, imagining a light data structure.

People are always connected to Sapient through the use of auxiliary artificial intelligences connected to their consciences through a device that I have called Pearl and which together with Sapient represents the new Internet network.

The story is based on many characters who inspired the story. Many are fictional but the main ones are real because I wanted to make the story believable and real.

A professor. Son of him. A Hacker Lab with three characters inspired by my life: Nath, Andrey and Stig. The famous characters are Larry, Sergej, Elon, Richard, Zuck, Bill and finally a worldwide organization called WWB which works together with Google on the development of Sapient.

There are also figures connected to my life and work, friends I grew up with. However, it remains a fictional story and the facts, although in part recalling real events, do not intend to harm any thought but only to inspire one of the many futures that we will have before us.

Sapient, Max and I would like to thank all of the following people.

My wife, for the support and patience she has given to my project that has lasted over four years.

My parents, for giving me a life inspired by dreams and space.

Franca Musa, who was the first to push me to write, giving me valuable suggestions and contributing to the story.

Sara Tamponi, my partner in crime, editor and accelerator of the writing process.

My friend Umberto, for the motivation he gives me even from afar.

All the friends who read the previews giving me valuable advice, including Irena, Paola, Mattia, Sergio and Marco.

Colleagues and business partners who listened to my stories and allusions to a book that never seemed to be finished.

The great bosses I was lucky enough to meet and who inspired me by showing me sides of success and of the human being that I didn't know.

Gianfranco, for having inspired the character of Mendalayus.

Thanks to the authors who have influenced and inspired me by accompanying me for many, many years: Asimov, Tolkien, GRR Martin, HPL, Stephen King, Dan Brown, Glenn Cooper, Ted Chiang, Bruce Sterling, Stephen Hawking, William Gibson.

And finally, I thank the characters in this story who have been the main source of inspiration from many different points of view.

The famous ones: Tim, Mark, Sergej, Larry, Elon, Bill, Richard and Geoffrey. I left out their surnames because we all know them.

And the less famous ones, but which I carry in my heart and which have given meaning to the many ideas I have brought to this story: Natalino, Francesco, Andrey, Andrea, Andrea, Domenico, Umberto, Marc and Vito.

I want to thank starryAI for giving me an important contribution in the creation of the graphics that accompanied the writing process and gave shape and substance to my imagination.

The book cover was created by starryAI using a mix of styles inspired by cyberpunk culture.
